Last year, Illinois passed a law allowing the concealed carry of registered firearms. Now just after three days of accepting permit applications online, the Illinois State Police has received over 15,000 applications, and many more are expected in the following months. Applications must be processed and reviewed within 30 to 120 days before a license can be issued or rejected. Illinois business and non-residential property owners, many of whom are concerned about safety, must decide whether to allow concealed carry in their property.
In order to prohibit concealed firearms onto a business establishment or private non-residential property, owners must clearly and conspicuously post the approved sign at the entrance of the building, premises, or real property. The sign must follow the Illinois State Police guidelines. A template of the approved sign can be downloaded and printed by clicking here. Owners must be sure that the sign is printed in black and red ink, and the surrounding border measures 4 inches from top to bottom and 6 inches from left to right. The phrase "Pursuant to 430 ILCS 66/65" must be clear. Owners may post a larger sign to include additional language if necessary, but the 4 inch by 6 inch sign must be visible somewhere on the larger sign.
Provisions in the law protect businesses from liability raising from incidents involving concealed weapon permit holders. For more information, visit the Illinois State Police website.
